All socially useful vocations should be taught under school system, and
hence the need for a change in the content of education- Apparently, this is
the crux of the contention of RVG (on behalf of the KSSP?). In his view, the
staggering rates of drop-outs of poor students at different levels of
education is due to wrong prioritization of the subject-matter,the stuff of
education; viz,the alleged bias toward university education and professional
courses of the higher order.
One is at a loss to understand whether the so-called socially
usefulvocations are persently in dire need of
trained/schooled/educated people.
Could it be the other way round?Actually one can see that many of such
vocations have been made redundant. For example, millions of
artisans, farmers, small traders, vocationists and other service providers are
forced to flee their homes and to end up in ghettos of the distant cities in
search of jobs, after having been deprived of thier means of
sustenance.Theimpact of the globalized, Corporates-dictated
socio-economic policies and
Super Mall culture is evident enough.
Is the declining compatibility of the poor with the existing education
system really attributable to any ills of the present curriculum ? Such a
line of thinking would be reductionist at the best, and sheer hypocrisy at
its worst.
Alternatively, What the hell of difference it makes in matter of social
utility, if a barber , an agricultural worker, a factory worker or any
vocationist were to acquire the necessary skills from designated vocational
schools or otherwise?
