You have omitted other possibilities. Take for example, our firm, an
industrial co-operative society is developing software and distribute it
under GPL. We are providing service based on the software we have developed
or other software available under GPL. We are doing this for last 8 years
and we are sustaining out of it. We do not have any government patronage for
it. It is a very viable business model.
You cannot deny other possibilities simply by assumption. You may
attempt it and analyse the experience before making such a strong opinion. I
feel the argument you put forward are coming out of the feelings that you
are compelled to earn your livings out of proprietary software business.
