I would like to add,

For existence and growth of swathanthra software no business model is
required as such. Because there are progressive people's movements behind
it, apart from the individual enthusiasm as Sasi pointed out. The history of
swathanthra software itself is a proof for it. From GNU/Linux, Free BSD,
GNU/Hurd, Apache, OpenOffice ... no need to list all for serving the purpose
of this mail. The considerable contribution came from the model highlighted
by Sasi. This growth will sustain and so many well conceived, innovative,
and socially relevant applications are to be precipitate from the well
needed swathanthra software domain even without the so called business
model.

However as a representative of the third world, I will prefer to have a
system where employment is generated through the swathanthra software
instead of a proprietary software. One of the advantage of this model, which
mentioned very rarely, is that all the amount spent for swathanthra software
project will be turn in to local employment or local income, which is very
much to be ensured in a financially hungry, human resources rich society
like ours.

I disagree with Sasi's view on the impact of using proprietary software for
customised applications. The use of swathathra has definitely will be
healthful for it as well. The added advantage is that a number of general
purpose software will be generated as a byproduct.
