Yes, the issue is with gmail (gmail strips down the uncode special
characters ZWJ and ZWNJ, though the same works fine with other google
services like google groups and orkut).

There is one - a chillu is formed by combining the base form+chandrakala+ZWJ
ര+്+ZWJ (closing square bracket on inscript keyboard on GNU/Linux) - ര്
This is the consensus and even accepted by those who support atomic
chillus (that is still a proposal in front of unicode consortium).
If you use the above mentioned combination it will work with all
unicode compliant fonts (Rachana, Anjali...)
