Dear Murali
Again you are trying to corner the issue to Shekwat's RSS background. That is not the issue. The issue is his attempt to act like a secular person to face the presidential election only. We are requesting him to stand for the election with his RSS Identity.
I don't think the election of V V Giri is a compairable one to Shekawat's candidature. V V Giri stood for the election as a candidate for a group of divided congress party against its own official candidate. Where as Shekawat is hiding under the cover of an indipendant to get more votes.
I wish insted of leaving the choice to congress to choose a candidate for UPA if CPM or Left choosen a Candidate as in the case of K.R. Narayanan might helped the nation to find a better choice. This is an unpardonable mistake of the Left only. In my opinion congress have no right to decide over a candidate on presidential election with 200MPs. Andhra Pradesh is the biggest state congress is ruling.
NB: This list showing a huge request for unsubscription. Is it because of the ongoing discussion on presidential election?

Getting to any office requires political manipulative skills in India. The post of the President too is not exempt from this. Shekhawat's political gamble of contesting as an independent is nothing new - V V Giri did the same. Nor will it be the last - in all likelihood it will happen again. It is moot whether this is ethically right. But there is nothing unconstitutional or unlawful in it.
Getting fixated over one group or one issue has its own flip side. Pratibha Patil's candidature brings that into the fore. For all practical purposes, Ms Patil is the Left's candidate. The Congress would have been content with Shivraj Patil. The only qualification Pratibha had was, as far as the Left is concerned, that she opposed the anti-conversion bill of the Rajasthan government. Shivaraj Patil's only handicap was that he was deemed soft towards the BJP. As a result, we have a unique situation where a person with a highly questionable and dark past, who was involved in loan scams, ascending to the highest office. Whatever be the political manipulations that had taken place in the past, we never had a tainted person got elected. Why was Pratibha's antecedents overlooked? Only because the Left is fixated over keeping the BJP at bay.
Similarly, during the Dera Sacha Sauda controversy in Punjab, the same ugly side was laid bare. The sentiments behind the protests were purely communal, and one of the worst kind. There were calls to arrest the Dera chief, even murder him (it is highly likely that it could happen, as happened to the Nirankari Baba). Still there was absolutely no word of condemnation from the Left except a one liner from the CPM PB, in spite of the lessons of history, who leave no stone unturned to chastise Hindu fundamentalists. It is this kind of double standards that create resentment in the populace, and likely, turn them to organizations with extreme ideologies.
It is interesting that people are worried about the RSS background of Shekhawat but not the history of financial fraud and goondaism of Pratibha Patil and her clan. It is the same kind of twisted logic that kept Lalu raj for one and half decades in Bihar.
If Kannur is back to normal, well and good. But it would be foolish to be blind to the politics of violence that led it to that sorry past. Nor will it help to brush all this away as the handiwork of the 'media syndicate', whatever that means.
Best regards,
Murali.
